splashing

I'm referring to what people call taking a product (like a high performance boat hull) and creating a negative mold out of it with the intent of making copies without involving the original. Splashing generally implies or involves a theft of intellectual property or a design, although I can imagine a few legitimate uses too.

The American Composites Manufacturers Association used to have a good document explaining what splashing is, but they broke their website and went to a members-only format. A random page I found entitled Red Fish History uses the term in context.
